Sorority Myths
Let us demystify what television, movies and print media has influenced people to believe about sororities.

"All sorority girls do is party."
We have fun together, but we also work hard. ALL sorority members are required to complete semester community service hours, as well as participate in fundraising activities, and events which promote Asian awareness. Our sisters work hard in school, participate in other otganizations, and many also have a part-time job. All parties we throw are for fundraising purposes only, and we promote them heavily; therefore, people tend to assume that is all we do.

"All sorority girls smoke and drink."
We never encourage our members to smoke or drink. It is an individual's personal choice. Many of our own members are non-smokers/drinkers.

"Pledging will negatively affect your grades."
A sorority will not stand in your way of getting and education; we support everyone's academic goals. We have an Academic Chair who maintains and monitors everyone's grades and academic standing. Pledges have time to study. Most girls maintain their grades while pledging, while some even improve their GPA due to the time management skills they aquire during the process; it depends on the individual's study habits and time management skills.

"They do horrible things to their pledges."
Our pledge process never physically or emotionally harms anyone. Everything we do has a purpose. We want our pledges to learn many things we feel are important in being a part of our sisterhood and revolve the pledge process around that fact. We want you to be strong, independent women. We will not degrade anyone to achieve that.

"You are paying them to be your friends."
Nothing is further from the truth. You cannot just pay and be a member; you have to earn your place. You are not giving the sisters money in exchange for their friendships. You learn many things while you are pledging, such as leadership, responsibility, understanding, sacrifice, and love. You will build bonds with all the girls in the sorority, and even if you don't pay them, they will still be your sisters for life.

"The dues are high; you need to be rich to be in a sorority."
Our dues are the lowest of all sororities on campus. We are a non-profit organization, therefore all the money you put in goes back to you in other meaningful ways. Member dues go towards sisterhoods, exchanges, formals and service events. The sorority does not profit from pledge dues; they are exclusively spent on the pledges for pledge events. Most of our members work and attend school simultaneously. We know it may be hard to support yourself at times. Because of this, we participate in many fundraising projects to keep money coming out of our pockets to a minimum. We would never want money to be the reason you can't join, that's not what we're about.

In Reality...
Sororities are uniquely positioned to identify and develop women leaders within our college community today and in the local, national, and global communities of tomorrow. They are unified in their day-to-day operations and activities; members can identify and affect the social, economic, and political issues concerning the rights and progress women in society. They lay the foundation for networking opportunities, the critical interdependence of women who rely on one another's resourcefullness and who pull together for academic achievment, the successof the chapter, and contacts in the professional world. Sorority women join together to identify matters in the women's community that are relevant and significant to a women's organization.
